A local businessman is asking the City of Stratford to ban the display of the Confederate battle flag.
At their digital meeting Monday afternoon Stratford City Council will discuss a request from Kevin Larson to ban the display of the flag, which is used by some white supremacist group supporters, in the city.
Larson tells the Stratford Beacon Herald he made the request after E.B. Smith, a Black Stratford Festival actor, photographed a Confederate flag hanging in the window of a home in the city and posted the picture to Facebook.
Insults, which were often racially charged, were made against Smith which prompted them to be forwarded to Stratford Police.
City staff are recommending Larson’s request be forwarded to Perth-Wellington MP John Nater due to potential legal risks tied to creating a bylaw banning the flag.
The meeting starts at 3 o’clock.
