Shirley Beatrice Uniac, age 93, of Stratford passed away peacefully at Spruce Lodge on March 13, 2021.
Beloved wife of the late James Uniac who predeceased her in 1985. Loving mother of Terry, Gail Vivian (Dave), Tim (Val), Jim and John. Grandmother of Tyler (Caroline), Katie (Joe), Greg (Ally), Alex, Ella and great grandmother of Keira and Nolan. Also survived by sisters-in-law Doris Gladding, Diane Uniac, Connie Templeton and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her parents Walter and Alice “Dot” (Coleman) Gladding, step mother Amy Gladding, brothers Bob Gladding, Wally Gladding (Florence), sisters Dorothy Heysel (Jim), Cynthia Taylor (Bruce), brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Frank Uniac (Mary), Leo Uniac (Pat), Ken and Glenn Uniac.
She lived an amazing full life during her 93 years in this world, touching the hearts of everyone she encountered with her kind and welcoming ways. You may have crossed paths with her anywhere from badminton and basketball courts, to curling and figure skating competitions, to golf courses, ball fields or volleyball courts and by default, hockey arenas, watching her children, grandchildren and even her friends’ children. She enjoyed her bridge and poker games, her line dancing but most of all she enjoyed her family and friends. Her constant support was a testament to her genuine love for anyone she met. She was always there for her family, giving advice, praying for their health and safety, cooking for celebrations, driving grandkids to events and loving unconditionally through good times and bad. She treated everyone with dignity and respect and always put others before herself except if it was winning at cards. We are glad she found her way to a better place and will finally be reunited with her first love after 36 years to golf, play bridge and keep him in line. She brought us, laughter, joy, and showed us the true meaning of family. She will be missed but the memory of her and her legacy will live on in each of us. Rest in peace to one of the strongest and well-loved woman, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, mother-in- law, aunt and friend. “For every joy that passes something beautiful remains.” So when you are on the golf course and that long putt drops or you get that card you need at poker take a moment to look up and say hello and thank Big Shirl, Shirtsie, or Shylock for lending you her horseshoe. Special thanks to all the staff who took care of mother with compassion and dignity during her stay at Spruce Lodge and St.Mary’s Hospital.
Visitation at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday, March 19, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Those who wish to visit with the family must call the funeral home and make an appointment. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, 96 Huron Street, Stratford on Saturday, March 20, at 10 a.m. followed by a private family interment at Avondale Cemetery. Those who wish to attend the Mass must call the funeral home to book their attendance. Due to Covid restrictions and concerns please note that the family completely respects everyone’s decision on attendance. The seating capacity at the church is limited.
