HPPH top doctor says high level of COVID-19 community transmission continues

Huron Perth Public Health’s Medical Officer of Health says COVID-19 will be here to stay for a while longer.

Dr. Miriam Klassen says there is still a high level of transmission in the community.  She cautions that people, especially those at risk of severe outcomes like the elderly, must remain vigilant and avoid situations where it may be easier to get the virus.

Sadly, there has been one more death in the area bringing the death toll to 93.

Klassen reported there are no active outbreaks and there are four people in the hospital being treated for the virus.

Meanwhile, with provincial officials hinting that masks may become a thing of the past in this month Klassen agrees.

She says the Omicron wave coupled with vaccination rates of 81-percent created high levels of immunity in the community and for a lot of people at lower risk of infection it may be time to remove masks.

She says she would like to see the trends continue in the right direction and cautioned people at high risk of getting very ill from COVID-19 to remain masked-up in public settings, especially where others are not wearing one.
