Police issue water safety tips ahead of Labour Day long weekend

You’re being reminded about water safety ahead of the Labour Day long weekend.

Ontario Provincial Police say parents and caregivers should keep a close watch on any children or weak swimmers whether they are in a pool or an open body of water and they should always be wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device.

It’s never a good idea to go swimming on your own either, according to police, and you should always go with a friend or family member.

Perth County OPP Constable Beth Hanlon says you should always be aware of the conditions around you.

“Be mindful of the weather conditions, it is anticipated to be beautiful but those conditions can change very quickly so before venturing into, especially open bodies of water, you want to be mindful of what’s anticipated to come.”

If you’re not a strong swimmer, Hanlon says it’s a good idea to wear a life jacket or personal flotation device for safety.
