First-of-its-kind in Canada delivery room opens at Stratford General Hospital

The Stratford General Hospital is now home to a first-of-its-kind in Canada delivery room.

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance’s Maternal Team cut the cord Wednesday on their new Wavecare Sensory Delivery Room which provides a stress-reducing environment and supports the labour process with customized programs for childbirth.

It features an ordinary delivery room but also includes a digital screen that plays nature scenes, dynamic lights in calming colors, and specially designed sound programs.

HPHA Manager Maternal Child Unit and Scheduling Unit Audra Boersen says the unit is part of the evolution of taking care of their patients.

“Whatever we can do on our behalf and with healthcare providers to support what those needs are and this is one step closer to that.”

Now that the first one is open, Boersen says more could be added to local hospitals in the future.
