Could use a little cowbell: Council agrees to one-day noise exemption

An exemption request for the facilities’ code of conduct at the Rotary Complex caused some noise at Stratford City Council.

Mark Viani, teacher and hockey coach at Stratford District Secondary School (SDSS), asked council on Monday for an exemption to the code’s rule to allow noise makers, including cowbells and rice in a 2L pop bottle to cheer on the school hockey team.

Coun. Bonnie Henderson was opposed, saying the request will “open a can of worms” and “anybody can come forward” and request noisemakers.

She said there is a code of conduct for a reason.

Staff recommended filing the request and taking no action.

Henderson then asked for a recorded vote because she was “strongly opposed”.

Council moved the motion to permit the noisemakers and the amount total be limited to 15 individuals.

Henderson was the only opposition during the recorded vote.

The game, noise makers and all, is set for Friday.
