Keep up to date on Ontario Building Code changes with this seminar

With changes to the Ontario Building Code in effect, officials from local municipalities in Perth County, are teaming up to create a cohesive seminar for local tradespeople.

The departments are partnering with the Home Construction Regulatory Authority for a seminar next Wednesday (Jan. 29) at Stratford Rotary Complex.

It is intended for designers, contractors, tradespersons and developers who want to learn about the Ontario Building Code changes.

Connor Occleston (OC-CULL-SIN), deputy chief building official with the City of Stratford, spoke with MyStratfordNow about the big changes to the code.

This includes a new defined term of secondary suites, or two dwelling units located on a single residential property.

0:45 “This is gonna help push the More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022, to get more affordable units on residential properties that are existing or newly created.”

There are also changes to smoke and fire barriers and detectors, plumbing and mechanical updates and changes to farm buildings.

The reason for a team seminar approach is due to the fact that many local contractors work between multiple municipalities in the region.

2:30 “So getting all six in the Perth area together, to create one joint presentation to industry professionals, is huge for the implementation of the new building code changes moving forward.”

Occleston (OC-CULL-SIN) encourages all industry members to attend the seminar and learn how it will impact building in the area and construction across the province.

The seminar is 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and free to attend but an RSVP is required.

E-mail building@stratford.ca or call the city’s building department to confirm attendance.
