Celebrate Family Literacy Day with a week of fun at the library

It’s a day to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in literacy-related activities as a family.

Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27 highlights a week packed full of programming at Stratford Public Library.

Trish MacGregor, Stratford Public Library’s Children Librarian and Public Library on Wheels coordinator, expressed excitement about the upcoming programs.

“At the Stratford Public Library it’s a special day for us, because we celebrate that all year round, but we’re really excited to have this national day where we can promote and have fun, and explore together.” 

And one day to celebrate family literacy isn’t enough, so from Monday to Jan. 27 there will be programming everyday, either at the library or at a location in Stratford.

“A full week of family activities and lots of fun and an opportunity to explore this theme of learning to be green together,” said MacGregor.

This year’s theme is Learn to be Green, Together.

Starting on Monday (Jan. 20), Go Green! with Whale of a Tale programming at 6:30 pm at the library.

Tuesday (Jan. 21) there will be a recycled and upcycled craft station in the children’s department.

Baby Steps is Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 10 a.m. and Story Starters is Thursday (Jan. 23) at 10:30 a.m.

For the weekend (Jan. 24 – 26), there will be Unplugged Games at the library from Friday to Sunday, where library-goers can enjoy games and activities.

On Saturday (Jan. 25) , the library is hosting a story walk at Stratford Winterfest starting at 10 a.m., highlighting the book “Picture A Tree” by Barbara Reid.

There will also be a Tinker Lab on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the library at 2 p.m.

Then on Sunday (Jan. 26), there is the Tales and Trails: Winter Wonders at Stratford Perth Museum which goes from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The day after that is the Family Literacy Day Party at Whale of a Tale programming at 6:30 p.m. at the library.

Each time you attend a program you get a ballot to enter for a chance to win one of 20 Family Literacy Day prize packages.
