Library launches database to aid youth with English development

A new database at Stratford Public Library aims to help young English learners discover the magic of books while learning the language.

The database, LOTE4Kids, offers a collection of more than 4,500 digital children’s books in more than 70 languages, such as French, Chinese, Spanish and American Sign Language.

Kids can enjoy the books in Languages Other Than English (LOTE) or watch each book translated and narrated in English to aid with literacy development.

Alida Lemieux, public service librarian with the Stratford Public Library, explained the need for this type of database.

“Our physical collection at the library is limited by space, we don’t have a lot of children’s materials in other languages, so we hope that this database can help fill that gap.”

The database is intended for English learners ages three to eight, but older language learners are also welcome to explore.

And with 200 new books released monthly with comprehensive quizzes and downloadable activities, it’s a helpful resource for new Canadians and multi-lingual families.

“We’re hoping that this is just another resource out there that can help families, especially families with young kids, to help learn English,” said Lemieux.

Any Stratford Public Library card holder can access LOTE4Kids by going to the library’s website or downloading the app.

Staff can assist with downloading the app at the library’s location on St. Andrew Street.
