A lot has changed since the election of president Donald Trump.
So says Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae, who is gearing up for another provincial election and a short campaign, to be called Jan. 29, with voters set to hit the polls on Feb. 27.
Trump’s threats to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada have government officials preparing counter measures, while reminding our southern neighbours of our strong ties.
“I know the government as a whole has been doing a full court press to our American colleagues, governors, congressmen and (congress)women, reminding them of the importance of Ontario, specifically for their economic prosperity,” Rae told MyStratfordNow.
Rae said Ontario is the number one export destination for 17 U.S. states, and number two for 11 states.
“So vitally important for their economic prosperity as well as ours.”
The MPP said the premier often says the best ideas often come from outside of Queen’s Park.
“What better way to deal with the people directly than have an election?”
The Conservatives carry a majority heading into the next election. Rae said the party is confident and seeking another strong mandate.
“I know there are a lot of polls out there. The only pole that matters is the pole on election day. So I will work hard to earn the trust again of the people of Perth Wellington.”
