It’s a big weekend for hockey in Stratford.
The 46th annual Stratford International Silver Stick AA Regional Qualifying tournament takes place in arenas across the city this weekend, beginning Friday and running until the Sunday afternoon when the finals take place.
Traditionally the tournament takes place between Christmas and New Year’s Day, but organizers say it was moved up this year in order to keep the tournament viable.
Bob Zimmer is one of the organizers of the event and he says moving the tournament has been well received.
“We filled up very, very early, and that’s something that we haven’t done in years, now mind you we’ve cut down from eight teams per division to five to see how it would go as a new entity but it filled up very, very quickly, we had a large waiting list.”
Zimmer adds that they plan to go back to eight teams per division for next year’s tournament.
