Helping people to meet their needs, participate in society and live with dignity.
That’s what Huron Perth Public Health says would be accomplished with the creation of a basic income across Canada.
HPPH says that research shows that a low income has a long-term, negative impact on health and the COVID-19 pandemic has also shown that even a small loss of income has a big impact on people’s ability to meet their basic needs.
They brought up the issue in a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau they sent in June.
The Perth Huron United Way is also supporting the call for a basic income with their Living Wage Report finding that half the households in Huron and Perth Counties earn less than the living wage of $17.55 an hour.
