Oxford County resident loses $6,000 to CRA scam

An Oxford County resident is out $6,000 after falling victim to the Canada Revenue Agency scam.

The OPP says the resident got a voicemail last week saying they owed a large amount of back taxes. The resident was threatened with things like jail time and asset seizure if they didn’t pay up immediately.

The resident was convinced to make the payments by buying iTunes gift cards but became suspicious after being told even more money was owed. They got in touch with the police after their tax service told the resident no money was owed.

Remember to always be suspicious of any calls or messages you receive that threaten you or say you owe money. Call the CRA yourself if you ever have any doubts about your tax status.
