Happening Now: Roads closed off after fire in downtown Stratford

Update: 3:05 P.M. Thursday

Victim Services Bruce Grey Perth has been called in after a fire in downtown Stratford.

First responders were called to the building at 110 Ontario Street, home of the La Diperie ice cream shop on the first floor and apartments on the second, around noon on Thursday.

Stratford Fire Chief Neil Anderson says firefighters gained access to the rooftop where smoke, but no flames, was coming from and he adds charring was found in the walls and ceiling.

He says the residents inside at the time were outside when crews arrived.

“Now that the fire’s knocked down we have to make sure to find some housing for those who can’t go back in there.”

Anderson adds that the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
