SIU clears Stratford police officer in assault investigation

Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared a Stratford officer in an assault investigation.
Special Investigations Unit Director Joseph Martino says in a report that he has terminated an investigation into the June 2023 arrest of a 47-year-old man in Stratford.
Martino says the man had filed a complaint sometime after the arrest alleging that he was assaulted by an officer and suffered a broken rib.
Martino adds that based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, including a review of body-worn camera footage that captured the incident, he was satisfied that the investigation should be discontinued.
The SIU is a civilian agency in Ontario responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
