GOHL: Cambridge gets the jump on St. Marys in Sutherland Cup opener

A second period goal and an empty netter were enough for Cambridge to win the opening game of the GOHL Sutherland Cup championship.

Parker Smith and Callan Newton handled the offence for the Redhawks and Adam Hill stopped 18 shots for the shutout in a 2-0 win over St. Marys Lincolns on Saturday night at the Galt Arena Gardens.

Newton scored with 24 seconds left and Lincolns’ netminder Colby Booth-Housego on the bench for an extra attacker.

Booth-Housego stopped 27 shots.

The teams are back at it tonight for Game 2 of the best-of-seven at the Pyramid Recreation Centre in St. Marys.

The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
