With school in full swing, be aware of crossing guard safety

With students travelling back and forth to school each day, drivers are being reminded to exercise caution around school crossings and to keep a sharp eye out for students and crossing guards.

Police say when a school crossing guard displays a stop sign before entering the roadway, drivers from either direction are required by law to stop before reaching the crossing.

It applies to all vehicles whether intending to make a right or left turn at an intersection. Drivers must remain stopped until all persons, including the school crossing guard, have cleared the roadway.

Failing to stop for a crossing guard not only places lives at risk but can also result in enforcement action.

By slowing down, staying alert and following the law, police say motorists can help protect children and crossing guards and keep school crossings safe.
