Weather delays opening of sports fields and baseball diamonds in Stratford

The late blast of winter we’ve seen over the last month has lead to a delay in the opening of sports fields and baseball diamonds around Stratford.

The city says the fields and diamonds will stay closed until May 13th because they are very wet and some are still frozen meaning crews have not had the chance to roll the grass or provide maintenance and ensure they are safe to use.

Manager of Parks, Forestry and Cemetery for the City of Stratford Quinn Malott says they will open up things sooner if the weather cooperates.

“The snow just melted on Saturday so walking on the ball diamond right now we’re sinking a good half inch in, if the weather cooperates I know it’s supposed to rain here this week, we will try to get them on earlier.”

He adds they have to wait until everything is just right before they bring the ball diamond machine on the field because doing it too early would damage the area.
