Police issue warning over Canada Revenue Agency scam

You’re being warned about a telephone scam from fraudsters claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Police say the suspects are calling people and are impersonating the CRA and claiming that a recent audit has identified discrepancies from past filed taxes.

The caller says repayment is required immediately and that if the victim doesn’t pay that there will be additional fees and jail time.

According to police, the fraudsters may request payment through money transfer services, pre-paid cards or gift cards or bitcoin.

The CRA says that in most cases they will use registered mail to contact people, not email or phone, and you should contact them directly to see if you owe back taxes or are entitled to a refund.
