Perth-Wellington MPP pleased with new act intended to change Ontario’s apprenticeship program

The MPP for Perth-Wellington says he’s pleased that the Ontario government is cutting red tape and fixing the broken apprenticeship program.

Randy Pettapiece made the comment Tuesday after Bill 47, called the “Making Ontario Open for Business Act”, was introduced in the legislature.

If passed, the PC government says it would lower the journeyperson to apprentice ratios to 1:1 and would establish a moratorium on trades reclassification.

It would also de-prescribe 24 low-volume trades and Pettapiece says the legislation is great for job creators and for anyone looking for work in Ontario.

He adds that for “too long the apprenticeship system in Ontario punished small businesses in Perth-Wellington ” with the Ontario College of Trades preventing “millwrights, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and others from hiring and training young people.”
