Being prepared can help avoid a visit to the emergency department over the holidays

You’re being advised to be prepared in order to avoid a visit to the emergency department at the hospital over the holidays.

With some health care providers closing offices or reducing hours over the holidays, emergency departments like those at the St.Marys Memorial Hospital and the Stratford General Hospital can be the only option for those seeking medical attention between Christmas and the New Year.

This can lead to longer than usual wait times for healthier patients or for those who don’t require immediate emergency care.

Dr. Kyle Armstrong with the Clinton Family Health Team says, in order to avoid having to go to the emergency department, you should “make sure that everyone in your family has enough medications, both prescription and non-prescription, to get through the holidays.”

He adds that you should also make sure that “all medical equipment” such as inhalers and diabetic supplies “are in good working order.”
