Displaced GM workers in Oshawa could come to Ingersoll plant

With production coming to an end at the end of the year at GM’s plant in Oshawa, some of the displaced workers could end up in our area.

The automaker announced Wednesday it’s going to convert the Oshawa plant into a part-stamping and autonomous vehicle testing facility.

Unifor and GM Canada say the transition will cost $170 million and save 300 of the 26-hundred union jobs in Oshawa while the remaining employees that lose their jobs being offered relocation to other plants in Ontario including the Cami plant in Ingersoll.

Plant Chair of Union Local 88 at Cami, Mike Van Boekel, says there are currently around 220 workers that are laid off at his plant but once they are back to work anyone coming from Oshawa would be welcomed warmly.

“We’re hoping by early in the new year that we could be open for all the people from Oshawa or actually hiring from the street which would be great.”

Van Boekel adds that they are currently seeing a lot of employees retiring from the plant which will open up positions.
