Grandparent scam in Oxford county

The grandparent scam is alive and well in Oxford County.

The OPP has been informed that a resident received a call yesterday from a male claiming that their daughter was in an accident in Quebec and was in the hospital.

The caller claimed the money was needed for bail.

The resident contacted the OPP immediately and learned the information was false.

Police say there is no magic formula to preventing frauds and scams.

If something sounds too good to be true or seems weird, it probably is.

Beware of unsolicited phone calls, emails, letters, faxes and strangers at your door.

Never be convinced by high pressure tactics demanding that you act now.

Hang up the phone, delete the emails, and close your door.

The OPP strongly suggest that anyone receiving a request for money takes measures to verify the requester’s identity and the facts of their story.

Anyone who suspects an attempt at victimization is urged to call OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at 1-888-495-8501.
