Documentary helps keep alive the story of Ukrainian Airlines flight PS752

A story about loss, unanswered questions and seeking justice will make its world premiere in Stratford.

Fallen Star: The Shooting of Ukrainian Airlines PS752 is featured at this year’s Stratford Film Festival.

It tells the story of the Boeing plane shot down shortly after takeoff in Tehran, Iran on Jan. 8, 2020.

Film festival staff said 176 passengers were killed, including 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents.

Director Moze Mossanen said the families of the victims approached him to tell the story.

“They were fearful that this story would just get buried eventually, and a film would maybe help keep it alive. At the same time I didn’t know how to do it without it turning into a Mayday.”

He said making the film was difficult because families had to relive everything for the camera.

“A lot of them really hadn’t deconstructed this story in that way, in that kind of detail, they had to go deep into what really happened and how they felt.”

He added the film also shows the families coming together to try and seek justice, reparations and acknowledgment of their loss.

The documentary will be screened at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6 at the City Hall auditorium.

Tickets can be found on the festival website.
