County Council Hears from Ministry on Municipal Act Changes

Perth County Council has heard from Municipal Affairs and how Bill 68 impacts it.

Municipal Advisor Maureen Beatty went over some of the finer points of the sweeping changes which aim to modernize the Ontario Municipal Act.

The bill partially focuses on making sweeping changes pertaining to transparency and accountability, including each region or municipality creating an integrity commissioner position.

Another big change is any members of municipal or county level councils, along with school boards taking parental or pregnancy leave won’t lose their seats unless they’re off for longer than 20 weeks.

Beatty says another change is the definition of a meeting, new changes mean members of council will be able to attend public meetings via video conferencing.
