Police in Perth East cleared in man’s death

Police officers in Perth East have been cleared after a man died at a home last year.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says the man was pronounced dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following several hours of negotiations with police on April 14th, 2018.

Joseph Martino, interim director of the SIU, says there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against any OPP officer in relation to the man’s death.

Police were called to the man’s home just after 5 p.m. after a call reporting that he was armed and dangerous.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
