Buses available to take residents to Remembrance Day ceremony in Stratford

Everyone in the community is invited to attend a local Remembrance Day ceremony.

Steve Zurbrigg, a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 Stratford, said it’s important that everyone gets together for this important day.

Zurbrigg noted that parking is available on Nov. 11 at the ANAF Unit 261 on Lorne Avenue for parade watchers, and busses will depart about 9:45 a.m. to bring guests to the Stratford Cenotaph and the 4RCR Stratford Armoury.

The parade will proceed from the armoury to the cenotaph for the service, set to start at 10:45 a.m.

Included in the parade are 19th Stratford Squadron Air Cadets and 223 Perth County Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. 4RCR Stratford provides sentinels on the monument and are on parade.

Police, fire and emergency services are also involved.

The local poppy campaign, meanwhile, continues until Remembrance Day.

“Donations received are used in support of veterans and to assist youth in remembrance of those who served,” Zurbrigg said.

Zurbrigg said the local branch has sent its condolences and sympathies after the recent tragedy at CFB Wainwright and discussions are underway to send funds to the Alberta command in a show of support.

St. Marys remembers

St. Marys Legion and Army and Navy will host Veterans’ Decoration Day at the St. Marys Cemetery on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Loved ones of veterans interred at the cemetery are invited to receive complimentary flags to place at veterans’ graves. Flags can be picked up at the cemetery chapel on the day of the event.

The Royal Canadian Legion will hold a ceremony and parade on Sunday, marching from St. Marys Legion to the Town Hall Cenotaph at 12:30 p.m. A service of remembrance will follow.

Mayor Al Strathdee will lead a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Town Hall Cenotaph on Remembrance Day beginning at 10:45 a.m.

Following the ceremony, residents are encouraged to visit the St. Marys Museum exhibit titled Service on the Sea: St. Marys and the Royal Canadian Navy.
