Those killed or seriously injured in the workplace are being honored locally.
Sunday is the National Day of Mourning and the Stratford and District Labour Council is holding a ceremony to mark the occasion in Upper Queens Park in Stratford.
It's scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and will include guest speakers and music.
Patti-Jo Linder is with the Council and she says safety should always be front of mind.
"A healthy and safe workplace starts with each and every one of us so when we see something, or feel something going wrong, that we stand up and we speak about it and we talk about how to make it good."
The flag in front of Stratford City Hall has been lowered in recognition of the day.

Household hazardous waste collection in Stratford on Saturday https://www.mystratfordnow.com/105286/household-hazardous-waste-collection-in-stratford-on-saturday-2/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 16:48:59 +0000 https://www.mystratfordnow.com/?p=105286

Changes are being made to the collection of household hazardous waste in Stratford.

Collection days will now be held at the Romeo Street landfill site, instead of the Rotary Complex parking lot.

It starts this weekend with the first collection day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Trained professionals will be on hand to safely receive things like paints, varnishes, and caulking.
Starting at 9 a.m., vehicles waiting to drop off hazardous waste materials will enter the landfill site and then immediately turn right at the gravel road that runs around the perimeter of the site.
The collection depot is toward the east end of the landfill, and signs will be in place to direct traffic.
After dropping off materials, vehicles will continue along the gravel road and then turn right onto Lorne Avenue to exit the landfill site.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
• The landfill site opens at 8 a.m. Saturday for regular waste dropoff, but hazardous waste can not and will not be accepted until 9 a.m. (this is a condition of our certificate of compliance with the Ministry of Environment)
• As there is a longer collection time compared to previous years, consider delaying your trip until later in the afternoon, when the landfill site will likely be less busy
• For your own safety, please do not exit your vehicle while waiting to drop off your materials.
• The city is planning to hold more household hazardous waste collection days this year compared to previous years, and they will post a schedule as soon as details have been finalized.

Stratford Police scheduled to hold third annual Community Bike Sale on Saturday https://www.mystratfordnow.com/105221/stratford-police-scheduled-to-hold-third-annual-community-bike-sale-on-saturday/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 18:03:39 +0000 https://www.mystratfordnow.com/?p=105221

Stratford Police are hopping on two wheels to help support the Optimist Club of Stratford.
Scheduled for Saturday, the third annual Spring Community Bike Sale is taking place at the Rotary Complex from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
SPS Constable Darren Fischer says you can purchase a "new-to-you" bike that police have recovered over the last year and haven't been able to find the owner.
All money raised will go to the Optimist Club.
Fischer adds that you can also sign up for Project 529, which he says has been invaluable in returning stolen bikes to their owners.

"Most of these bikes have not been reported stolen, so, without Project 529, we wouldn't have any clue and this would just be another bike that would go into the sale."

Of the bikes that will be on sale, Fischer says officers recovered 42 while the others were donated.

At their meeting last week, town council recognized the six residents as part its "Strong as Stone" program which allows people to nominate those whose volunteer acts benefit the community.

Among the group was Cindy Bilyea, whose strong work ethic led her to become chair of the board for St. Marys Minor Hockey, Quadro Communications, and the St. Marys Healthcare Foundation.

Local teen Daniel Greig was recognized for his extensive volunteer work in the community and his involvement with student council at DCVI.

Ine Keller was applauded for her enthusiastic and inspirational teaching of seniors fitness and falls prevention classes.

Pam Zabel was nominated twice this round for her tireless work with the Coldest Night of the Year, her contributions to local causes and her time spent on advisory and fundraising committees.

Perth South Council disappointed over library services contract https://www.mystratfordnow.com/105013/perth-south-council-disappointed-over-library-services-contract/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 18:30:58 +0000 https://www.mystratfordnow.com/?p=105013

Some members of Perth South Council say they are disappointed that St. Marys and Stratford are unwilling to work with the municipality to renew their library services contract.

At the Perth South council meeting on April 16th, it was noted that Stratford withdrew the renewal proposal it presented to council in January and made it conditional on there being a contract with St. Marys.

Perth South requires only one library services contract.

Perth South Mayor Jim Aitcheson said that council is “extremely sorry” that residents will have to manage through an anticipated disruption in service.

“But we could not have expected that Stratford and St. Marys would work together to prevent Perth South residents from accessing library services”, the mayor said.

Council members voted to explore alternatives to acquire library services for Perth South ratepayers.

Aitcheson said efforts are underway to acquire a library service contract. In the interim, Perth South ratepayers may be required to purchase a non-resident library card. The township will re-imburse non-resident library card fees incurred by Perth South ratepayers.

Perth-Wellington MP gives new federal budget a failing grade https://www.mystratfordnow.com/105010/perth-wellington-mpp-gives-new-federal-budget-a-failing-grade/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 17:54:13 +0000 https://www.mystratfordnow.com/?p=105010

Perth-Wellington's MP says the just-released federal budget is a desperate attempt by the Liberal government to change the channel.
John Nater says the budget released on Tuesday shows the Liberals don't have a handle on government spending or on what the needs of Canadians are.
The budget includes money for new housing, a national school lunch program, and expanded child care but no increase in taxes on the middle class.
However, Nater says not enough is being done to help Canadians afford the rising cost of life.
"In the last eight-and-a-half years we've seen the amount for a down payment skyrocket, more than double, we've seen the cost of mortgages double in the last eight-and-a-half years and the solutions that the government is providing are simply not working."
Nater says his party won't be supporting the budget and adds they would be ready to head to the polls if an election was called today.

Perth-Wellington's MPP says a newly tabled bill will remove barriers to investment in the agritourism sector across the province.

Matthew Rae tabled the Growing Agritourism Act today (Monday) and he says, if passed, the legislation will remove barriers to investment, provide consistency across Ontario's agritourism providers, and ensure participants are aware of the inherent risks associated with farm activities.

Agritourism is any agriculturally based operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm or ranch.

The act is MPP Rae’s second Private Members Bill since being elected two years ago.

Home sales up slightly in the Stratford area last month https://www.mystratfordnow.com/104910/home-sales-up-slightly-in-the-stratford-area-last-month/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 17:22:01 +0000 https://www.mystratfordnow.com/?p=104910

The number of homes sold in our region last month was up slightly compared to a year ago.

That's according to the Huron Perth Association of Realtors who says there were 139 units sold in March, up by 1.5 per cent from March 2023.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales totaled 363 units over the first three months of the year. This was an increase of 15.6% from the same period in 2023.

“Sales activity remained at the same levels as last year, while new listings rebounded to above-average levels in March,” said Teresa Ondrejicka, President of the Huron Perth Association of Realtors. “While buyers appear to remain cautious, perhaps running out the clock until the first interest rate cut appears on the horizon, sellers have been less patient and are raring to go this spring. Our market is well supplied but not oversupplied at the moment, so once buyers decide to get off the sidelines they will find that there is plenty of choice waiting for them.”

The average price of homes sold in March 2024 was $579,971, a slight reduction of 0.3% from March 2023.
